What is a Net Worth Certificate?

A formal document issued by a practising Chartered Accountant that certifies an individual's, partnership firm's, HUF's, or company's total financial worth on a specific date — calculated as Total Assets minus Total Liabilities.

A Net Worth Certificate (NWC) is a CA-attested statement that establishes a person's or entity's economic standing at a specific point in time. It lists all assets — immovable property at fair market value, bank balances, fixed deposits, shares, mutual funds, gold, jewellery, vehicles, business interests — and deducts all liabilities — home loans, personal loans, business loans, credit card outstanding, and any other obligations — to arrive at the Net Worth.

Because it is signed by a Chartered Accountant under the ICAI Code of Ethics with a Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) — verifiable live on udin.icai.org — embassies, banks, regulatory authorities and tender-issuing bodies treat it as authentic, third-party, professional verification of the financial position. It is far more credible than a self-declaration or affidavit.

At CA Alok Kumar (FCA, AICA, LLM, AML Specialist), Senior Partner at S.K. Mehta & Co. (established 1970, 110+ professionals), Net Worth Certificates are drafted with valuation rigour, document trail integrity, and embassy-compliant formatting — backed by 22+ years of practice across taxation, audit, and CA certification work.

Who Needs a Net Worth Certificate?

A Net Worth Certificate is required across personal, business, regulatory, and immigration contexts. Here are the most common situations.

Visa Applications

Student visas (F-1 USA, UK Tier-4, Canada SDS, Australia 500), business and investor visas, dependent visas, and tourist visas for high-asset visitors. Embassies require documentary proof of financial sufficiency.

Bank Loans & Credit

Home loans, business loans, working capital limits, overdraft facilities, project finance, and credit card upgrades. Banks evaluate net worth as part of borrower profiling and exposure norms.

Government & PSU Tenders

CPWD, Railways, NHAI, PSU, defence and state government tenders mandate a CA-certified Net Worth Certificate as part of pre-qualification. Most tender notices specify a minimum net worth threshold.

IPO & Capital Issues

Promoters, directors, and key managerial personnel are required to disclose net worth in DRHP/RHP filings with SEBI under ICDR Regulations. Listed companies also require NWC for related-party disclosures.

Director & Promoter Declarations

Companies Act, FEMA, and corporate governance frameworks require directors and promoters to file periodic net worth disclosures. NWC is often attached to MCA filings, ROC returns, and bank guarantees.

Court & Legal Proceedings

Required in matrimonial cases, partition suits, debt recovery proceedings, insolvency filings (IBC), bail matters, and property settlements. Courts treat CA-certified NWC as primary evidence of financial position.

Business Partnerships

For onboarding new partners in firms or LLPs, mergers, joint ventures, distributorship/franchise agreements, and credit assessments by suppliers. NWC builds trust at the negotiation stage.

NRI & Foreign Filings

Investment registrations under FEMA, OCI / dual-tax-residency declarations, foreign property purchase, and immigration to USA / Canada / Australia / UK. Foreign authorities prefer Indian CA-certified NWC.

Net Worth Certificate — Frequently Asked Questions

Quick, clear answers to the most common questions our clients ask before getting an NWC.

1. What is a Net Worth Certificate and why is it needed?

A Net Worth Certificate is a CA-attested document that summarizes your total assets minus total liabilities on a specific date, certifying your financial standing. It is needed for visa applications, bank loans, government tenders, IPOs, immigration filings, court proceedings, and director declarations — situations where authorities want independent verification of your financial position rather than your own statement. Estimate yours using our free calculator.

2. Who can issue a Net Worth Certificate in India?

Only a practising Chartered Accountant holding a valid Certificate of Practice from ICAI can issue a Net Worth Certificate. The certificate must include the CA's signature, membership number, firm registration number, and a Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN) generated on the ICAI portal. Certificates without UDIN are routinely rejected by embassies, banks, and tender authorities. CA Alok Kumar (FCA, AICA, LLM) is a Senior Partner at S.K. Mehta & Co. (FRN since 1970), authorized to issue UDIN-verified NWCs.

3. How is net worth calculated?

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities.

Assets include immovable property at fair market value, bank balances, FDs/RDs, listed shares and mutual funds at market value, gold and jewellery at present rate, vehicles at written-down value, business or partnership capital, insurance surrender values, PPF/EPF/NPS balances, and other tangible assets.

Liabilities include outstanding home loans, personal loans, vehicle loans, business loans, credit card dues, education loans, loans against property/FD/shares, income tax/GST payables, and any other obligations. The CA values each item using accepted valuation principles and discloses the basis in the certificate.

4. What documents are required for a Net Worth Certificate?

Typically required: PAN, Aadhaar, last 2-3 years' ITRs and computations, latest bank statements (all accounts), property documents with valuation reports, demat/MF statements, FD/RD certificates, gold/jewellery valuation, vehicle RC, business balance sheet (if applicable), loan outstanding statements, and credit card statements. We share a customized checklist after the initial consultation based on your specific asset/liability mix and the certificate's purpose.

5. Is UDIN mandatory on a Net Worth Certificate?

Yes, absolutely. Per ICAI guidelines effective since 1 February 2019, every certificate signed by a Chartered Accountant must carry a Unique Document Identification Number (UDIN). UDIN can be verified live on udin.icai.org by the receiving party. Embassies, PSU banks, regulatory bodies, and PSU tender authorities now insist on UDIN-verified certificates only — certificates without UDIN are treated as invalid.

6. How long does it take to get a Net Worth Certificate?

Our standard turnaround is 2 to 5 working days from the date of receiving complete documents. Same-day or next-day delivery is available on a priority basis for urgent visa interviews, loan deadlines, or tender submissions — subject to document readiness. Property/jewellery valuation reports, if required, may add 1-2 days. Please share your deadline upfront so we can plan accordingly.

7. How long is a Net Worth Certificate valid?

A Net Worth Certificate reflects financial position as on a specific date (the "as on" date). Most embassies and banks accept certificates issued within the last 3 to 6 months; some accept up to 12 months. Tender authorities, SEBI filings, and regulators may have their own specific validity rules — always check the receiving authority's requirement before submission. We recommend obtaining a fresh NWC if the previous one is older than 6 months.

8. Can a Net Worth Certificate be used for multiple purposes?

Yes. Within its validity window, the same NWC can be submitted to multiple authorities — for example, one certificate can support a visa application, a loan application, and a tender bid simultaneously. However, some authorities require purpose-specific certificates explicitly addressed to them (especially for SEBI / FEMA filings). In such cases, we recommend a separately addressed version — we issue these at a nominal additional cost.

9. Can I get a Net Worth Certificate if I have outstanding loans?

Absolutely yes. Outstanding loans are a normal part of every Net Worth Certificate — they appear under Liabilities. The certificate captures the realistic financial position by showing assets, deducting all liabilities (including all loans), and disclosing net worth. Having loans does not disqualify you; it simply reduces the net worth figure. Embassies and authorities expect to see liabilities — a certificate showing zero liabilities for someone with a home loan would, in fact, raise concerns.

10. What is the cost of a Net Worth Certificate?

Charges depend on complexity — number and type of asset classes, requirement of property/jewellery valuation reports, urgency of delivery, and whether the certificate is for an individual, partnership firm, HUF, or company. We do not display fixed pricing publicly because every case differs. Charges on request — please share your requirement on +91-9818167102 or alok@skmehta.co.in for a tailored quote.

11. Can NRIs get a Net Worth Certificate from India?

Yes — we serve NRI clients across USA, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore, Europe, and 50+ other countries. The entire process is online: documents are shared via secure email or WhatsApp, a video consultation is held if needed, the draft is reviewed remotely, and the final UDIN-verified certificate is emailed (PDF + signed copy) plus couriered internationally. Many NRIs use this for OCI applications, foreign property purchase, FEMA filings, and re-investment registrations. See our dedicated NRI Taxation & FEMA Services page.

12. What's the difference between a Net Worth Certificate and a Solvency Certificate?

A Net Worth Certificate states the absolute amount of net worth (Assets minus Liabilities). A Solvency Certificate certifies that the person/entity is solvent up to a specific declared amount — for example, "solvent to the extent of ₹50 lakh." Both are CA-issued and UDIN-verified. Tender authorities sometimes specifically ask for a Solvency Certificate. We issue both — please confirm with the receiving authority which one is needed.
